A Modern Woman’s Life

Stress is something every one of us has experienced. Our to-do list lengthens, our deadlines approach, and then we feel it—the panic of thinking that there just aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done. Right now, I’m doing my fair share of juggling. With my kids home for the summer, a sick parent and a business to run, life can feel more than a little crazy. The life of a modern woman is sometimes less than fabulous.

But for me, it’s worth it. And one of the biggest steps I’ve taken to help manage my stress is to practice mindfulness and self-care. This not only leads to more feelings of gratitude, but can also have a positive impact on your health. And with so many things to accomplish, staying healthy and on top of my game is really important.

One Ted Talk I’ve had on repeat lately is Kristen Race’s “Settle Down, Pay Attention, Say Thank You: A How-To”. She talks about the science behind stress, as well as the benefits of mindfulness and gratitude. This is worth a watch!

When you’re running from soccer practice to dance recitals, or from business meetings to doctors’ appointments, it may seem impossible to schedule time to focus on yourself. But self-care is just as important as any other errand on your to-do list. Even as a mother of three, I always try to carve out time for myself, so I can be at my best to tackle what every day has to offer. Yoga is one of my favourite ways to de-stress and reset, but you can find what works best for you. Just taking fifteen minutes to sit in silence and recharge can be a huge help.

I love this quote from Lucille Ball: “love yourself first, and everything else falls in line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world”. It reminds me that taking the time to care for yourself benefits not only you, but also those around you. Pushing yourself may seem like the only way to get things done, but in the end it actually has the opposite effect. So today, try doing something just for you. I promise that your body and mind will thank you.

Let’s keep each other accountable! Decide on your self-care activity and put it on your calendar. Then tell us about it in the comments below. Better yet, take a self-care selfie and link to us on Instagram with the hashtag #modernwoman.
